The Case Study on navigation behavior within the virtual environment DAVE, on which this diploma thesis is based, was conducted within the framework and in collaboration with the Austrian Institute of Technology. The virtual environment used for this experiment is operated by the science organisation Fraunhofer Austria and is located at the Technical University in Graz Inffeldgasse.
The study was conducted with a group of volunteer student - one group was tested in the real environment, the other in the virtual environment DAVE.
The main objective of this diploma thesis is to test and evaluate the extent of the difference of the behavior of test group 1 within DAVE (Definitely Affordable Virtual Environment) when it comes to estimation and routing tasks in comparison to the test group 2 in real life.
The first part summarises the already existing research and studies in the field, while the second chapter deals with the experiment itself, which was conducted in the course of summer 2012.
The goal of this diploma thesis and case study of the AIT is to evaluate if DAVE experiments produce valuable outcomes in testing, meaning that there is no significant difference in behavior between the test groups. Should this be true DAVE will also be used in future to support spatial planning and to test if urban construction projects of a bigger scale, such as airports or railway stations, are user-friendly.

Ziel der Diplomarbeit ist es, herauszufinden, in welchem Ausmaß sich das Verhalten von den Probanden in der DAVE (Definitely Affordable Virtual Environment) in Bezug auf Schätzungsaufgaben und einer Wegfindungsaufgabe im Vergleich zu den Testpersonen, die den gleichen Versuch in der Realität absolvieren, unterscheidet. Der erste Teil fasst die Forschungen und Studien, welche bis zum heutigen Zeitpunkt betrieben wurden, zusammen. Das zweite Kapitel beinhaltet das Experiment, das im Zuge dieser Arbeit durchgeführt wurde.
Im Rahmen eines Projekts des Austrian Institute of Technology wurde die Case Study "Navigationsverhalten in der virtuellen Welt DAVE" durchgeführt. Die virtuelle Welt befindet sich an der TU Graz - Inffeldgasse und wird von der Forschungsorganisation Fraunhofer Austria betrieben.
Wenn das Ergebnis dieser Studie positiv ausfällt und kein signifikanter Unterschied im Vergleich zu der REAL Gruppe und der DAVE Gruppe besteht, soll die DAVE in weiterer Folge Planungsprojekte unterstützen und die Benutzerfreundlichkeit von Großbauprojekten, wie einem Flughafen oder einem Bahnhof, testen.
