The quality of soil moisture retrieval from ESA´s Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity Mission (SMOS) is evaluated. SMOS Level 2 Soil moisture and SMOS soil moisture retrievals from the Land Parameter Retrieval Model (LPRM) are compared to other existing soil moisture products including LPRM AMSR-E, WindSat, TRMM, and METOP-ASCAT soil moisture products. Different scans in time covering a large variety of land surfaces and soil moisture fields are investigated. A correspondence analysis is applied to compare the spatial patterns of the different soil moisture fields. An error propagation analysis is applied to calculate the theoretical errors of the different products. Both the impact of satellite constellation and retrieval methodology on the quality of satellite soil moisture products are studied. This study puts the potential added quality of SMOS soil moisture in perspective by comparing it to other existing soil moisture products and demonstrating the importance of L-band and multi-angle observations for soil moisture retrieval.
