Cartography is perhaps more than ever affected and advanced by technological innovations and developments. New possibilities in acquisition of spatial data, their processing and modelling, and finally their distribution are available. In the context of new technologies, an increasing number of cartographic applications are available or being development. Cartographers are called upon to redefine the role of their scientific discipline and to integrate the theoretical foundations with technological developments. The role of the International Cartographic Association (ICA) is crucial in this transition. The International Cartographic Conference 2013 in Dresden, Germany in August 2013 will demonstrate the relevance, the attractiveness and the modernity of contemporary cartography (www.icc2013.org).
