English abstract:
Cartography is currently seen by many as a discipline
facing a change of paradigm triggered by technological
challenges. As a result of today's innovative technologies,
such as the Internet, multimedia and telecommunication
infrastructure, it becomes possible for cartographic communication processes to be realized by delivering user-tailored information to specific user groups everywhere ("ubiquitously") and anytime.
Th is paper reviews an enormous diversity of fundamental issues which are appearing in modern cartography due to technological advancements. It argues that a theoretical foundation is necessary for defining the core elements of a discipline. The role of international efforts in this respect is discussed and will be highlighted. By discussing the existing Research Agenda of
the International Cartographic Association (ICA) and other similar documents and initiatives from related disciplines, a vision for further development of the Body of Knowledge for Cartography and related disciplines is presented.
