English abstract:
The development of concepts and prototypes of location based applications especially for the usage in UMTS environments is the main goal of a two-year-research project in co-operation with a consortium of austrian research institutes and telecommunication companies at "FTW - Forschungszentrum Telekommunikation Wien" (www.ftw.at, 2000).

The state-of-the-art experience with dynamically generated map representations on small hand-held displays for mobile usage situations is currently starting to develop and poses a number of challenges and will therefore be a main issue of the project. In developing a location based service for UMTS environment, the project is organised in four main parts:
specifications of technical prerequisites and conceptuals;
evaluation and development of localisation and positioning algorithms;
application development and;
application implementation.

In this paper the main focus will be on selected cartographic aspects of the application development.
