English abstract:
Forest area was derived over a study area in eastern Austria using 2014/2015 winter season Sentinel-1A acquisitions. The resulting 10m resolution mask was validated using the reference forest mask derived from the airbourne full-waveform laser scanning data. Despite the temporal gap of almost 5 years between the ALS and Sentinel-1 data acquisitions, the overall accuracy exceeded 90% with kappa statistics of 0.81. The forest mask from Sentinel-1 data has high potential for forest change detection mapping.
