Visual and cognitive processing capabilities of map readers are limited. There is a need for assistance and help to use the interface and to understand the map content. This research is directed to the question if the Assistant for Map Interpretation is useful to improve the usage of complex interactive thematic maps. To evaluate the assistant tool, perception, attentional behaviour and experience from extant help systems and user guides are taken into account. The usability test reveals that the Assistant for Interpretation is a helpful tool for an easier understanding of the contents of the map. This is especially the case for not experienced map users and for maps of areas users are not familiar with. However, the assistant hinders - in some ways - the userīs self guided exploration.

Begrenzte visuelle und kognitive Verarbeitungsfähigkeiten des Menschen können bei der Benutzung von interaktiven Karten zu Überforderung führen, weshalb verschiedene Konzepte zu Nutzerführung und Hilfestellung eingesetzt werden. Eine Möglichkeit ist die sogenannte Interpretationshilfe, die durch erklärende Texte Schritt für Schritt durch die Karte führt und relevante Inhalte zusammenstellt. Unter Berücksichtigung perzeptiver Regeln, Aufmerksamkeitsverhalten und Erfahrungen aus bereits umgesetzten Nutzerführungskonzepten wird die unterstützende Wirkung der Interpretationshilfe in komplexen interaktiven Karten untersucht. Der durchgeführte Usability-Test zeigt, dass sich ihr Einsatz positiv auf eine korrekte Interpretation des Karteninhalts, jedoch einschränkend auf das Explorationsverhalten auswirkt.
