English abstract:
The popularity and use of modern smartphones and tablet computers has increased significantly in the last years. Apart from communication they also provide localization capabilities using their in-built geosensors such as GPS, accelerometers, digital compass and barometric pressure sensor. In addition, these mobile devices include a Wi-Fi (a.k.a. WLAN) card which can be used also for positioning. Using Wi-Fi two different localization methods can be employed, i.e., trilateration and location fingerprinting. After a short description of the theory behind, tests performed in a localization test bed at the Vienna University of Technology with two different smartphones (i.e., a Samsung Galaxy SII and a HTC EVO 3D) in an office indoor environment are presented in this contribution. These field experiments have proven the feasibility of using smartphones for tracking in LBS and other navigation applications in combined indoor/outdoor environments.
