UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) is the emerging new standard for wireless communication and information transmission which enables broadband internet access on mobile devices. This makes multimedia applications for wireless handheld devices become reality for the first time. Map based information systems will be realized in combination with location based services. The ftw. Forschungszentrum Telekommunikation Wien together with the department of Cartography and Geomedia Technique has developed a prototype of such an UMTS-application. LoL@ (Local Location Assistant) presents map based and position dependent multimedia information for tourists on a predefined tour through Vienna's city center.

UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) wird in Kürze den mobilen Breitbandzugang ins Internet ermöglichen. Dadurch können erstmals multimediale Applikationen an mobilen Endgeräten (wireless handheld devices) realisiert werden. Kartenbasierte Informationssysteme werden somit in Kombination mit location based services möglich. Das Institut für Kartographie und Geo-Medientechnik hat in Zusammenarbeit mit dem ftw. Forschungszentrum Telekommunikation Wien den Prototypen einer solchen UMTS-Applikation entwickelt. LoL@ (Local Location Assistant) bietet kartenbasierte und positionsabhängige Multimedia-Informationen für Touristen entlang einer vorgegebenen Route durch die Wiener Innenstadt.
